Now, I realize this series won't be for everyone but this was the comic that made me fall in love with X-Force. Hard.Whether or not you'll enjoy this as much as I do is contingent on a few things.Ask yourself these questions:Do I wanna see X-23 and Wolverine fuck up some bad guys?Do I wanna see Warren turn into a metal Angel of Death?Do I wanna see Domino do her badass Domino-y thing?Do I wanna see Warpath and Ghost Rider take on a motherfucking Demon Bear?If you answered yes any of these, then you need to get this book.Domino, Elixer, and a very reluctant Vanisher round out the team this time, as the X-Force goes on the hunt for the Legacy Virus.Lots of \

 from Laura and Logan, Angel is hanging on to sanity by a thread, and Elixer is continually about to shit all his pants.That whole storyline was a lot of fun, but the adding Vanisher into the mix really pushed it up a notch.At the same time, Proudstar is off learning the ways of the Force from Ghost Rider. But the demon bear has a secret of his own...Ok. After everyone has been blown up one or twice, they meet up to compare notes. Turns out, Warpath now knows the identity of the mysterious Eli Bard.*wavy/blurry lines*The book ends with a really good flashback scene that explains just where this dude came from, and possibly what he's trying to accomplish now.Great stuff!

2018Just wanted to re-read this and make sure it still belonged on my Favorites list.Yep! It's still one of the best overall X-titles I've read and you great for anyone who wants to dip their toes into the dark side of the mutant Marvel world. Original review: 2014Per some conversations with Jeff, I've come to realize that libraries (at least mine and his) have an overabundance of both Green Lantern and X-Men titles.And for some unfathomable reason, I keep picking up the GL titles, even though I'm pretty much sick of the sight of them.So.I've decided to branch out and take advantage of all 10 bjillion X-titles that I had, thus far, managed to ignore.Hello, X-Force!Shiny cover? Check!Pretty art? Check!And as an added bonus, volumes 1, 2, and 3 were all sitting neatly in order...just waiting for me to grab them.As much as anything X-related tends to freak me out, this one was surprisingly easy to navigate!Angels and Demons is about getting the band back together. “Kicks just keep getting’ harder to findAnd all your kicks ain’t bringin’ you peace of mind”Because I’m a relatively mean and shallow person, I’m always ready to jump on a writer’s pretentions or missteps and there’s no one with a bigger target on his back than Grant Morrison. He’s written some seriously misguided crap; peppering his work with allusions to Keats or Milton and quoting The Kinks or William S. Burroughs or Little Lulu that I’m usually just too stupid to get. Yet the man is capable of some extraordinary work – brilliant, funny with plenty of love and respect for the history of comics. With New X-Men, one of a handful of Marvel titles he wrote, Morrison, in his manifesto included in this book, wanted the X-books to return to the halcyon days of Byrne and Claremont, exciting times before the X-titles became inert and mind-numbing. For the most part he succeeded. Back in the day, I remember looking forward to picking up this title in single issues.This is the culmination of the run that Morrison had planned out from the beginning with the only head scratcher being the final story line from the future. Wolverine recruits a drunken Cyclops at the Hellfire Club.Along with Fantomax (Vive le Fanotmax!), their mission is to infiltrate Weapon X.Logan learns Weapon X history stuff.After hiding behind his Xorn disguise, Magneto, hopped on Kick (the song lyrics at the beginning of the review finally make sense), a humdinger mutant-power enhancing crack, does the full reveal and finally punks the X-Men.However, his (Xorn’s) special-ed class is confused.But Magneto goes balls to the wall to create a new mutant paradise in Manhattan.…until the inevitable showdown.Future times are a mixed bag.Yep, Wolverine dies for like the millionth time…The art’s also a mixed bag. Frank Quietly helped set the tone with Morrison in the beginning of the run. In this volume, a different artist takes a turn for each story arc. That includes Chris “Just-what-the-hell-am-I-looking at” Bachalo.Bottom line: Aside from a recommended cracker jack run on this title, we owe Morrison an X-debt for Fantomax, Quentin Quire, the Cuckoo Sisters and Emma Frost’s white ho outfit. Thanks, Grant!!No worries for Wolverine, being pee-shy is not a secondary mutant ability.

Stories so powerful in message and so grand in scale that the guidelines by which such tales are usually judged are completely rearranged. There had to be a better way.Mac Walters and Jill McCullough, holding a private wake for their world in a Reno bar, were more than startled when a strange-looking little drunk told them they could save the world.All they had to do was enter five alternate universes and steal a demon-guarded jewel in each. Clearly, the man was crazy.But they had nothing better to do than go along with the gag. Then they each found themselves, naked and alone, on a hostile alien world!

On far Tarot dreams come true—and fanged nightmares stalk the land. Sent to pierce the dread curtain of the Animation that turns fantasy into hideous reality, the wanderer-monk Paul finds himself on a trip to the ultimate and most terrifying fantasy of them all. Hell.

When I was young, I devoured Anthony's fantasy fiction voraciously, and as I got a bit older, I started exploring his forays into "hard" sf, occasionally being surprised at the depth he was capable of. This book stands sort of at the precipice between those two extremes. It posits a world called Tarot, which causes hallucinations in its visitors, based on their visual-emotional states, which is becoming the center of a religious movement. Paul, a young monk from Earth, is sent to examine this planet for his Order, and to attempt to determine if the God of Tarot is real.Anthony structures the plot around the first nine trumps of the Tarot deck, with an odd interlude for a "Ghost" card which he introduces himself, but for the most part this book appears to follow the traditional deck in a structured and interesting manner (the next book would not). Anthony explores a number of themes, including spirituality and its relationship to carnality, drug addiction, faith, the occult, and the impact of matter-transmission technology on society, with intelligence and care. Although his understanding of the tarot itself seems fairly superficial, to judge by the appendices, he nevertheless manages to create an interesting story here that will not annoy those with greater knowledge. Unfortunately, the rest of the series did not retain this high standard.

This second book in what is now a series of four was written six years after the first. In this double mystery are elements of the game, the park workings, and an in-park presentation being made to pitch "The Barsoom Project", a Mars colonization effort.Read this one originally in or shortly after college. Star Trek TNG debuted while this was being written, and I wonder if their holodeck influenced the authors. The mystery and characters are good, and we see humor from the players of the game, one of whom is a comedian. An afterword talks about sources for the legends and science, and also the IFGS, a real-life society founded to try and create a real Dream Park sometime in the future.This book references the original novel, but could almost stand alone. Purchased the third book also, but not sure whether I read it at the time. That mystery will be solved this year, when I attempt to finish off this series.

The Serpent Mage" - book two - picks up shortly after Infinity Concerto leaves off. Michael Perrin is back home, living with his parents and continuing his training. Arno Waltiri has left his estate and the disposition of his papers and recordings to Michael. Waltiri has also left his house to Michael and eventually Michael moves in and begins to go through the papers.Michael's desires for normality are shattered, however, when he reads a news story about strange bodies discovered in a nearby hotel - one grossly obese, one strangely mummified and in a party dress. Other news stories speak of "hauntings" around the world - Michael suspects that the Sidhe are coming to Earth. If that isn't enough, he is contacted by a musical faculty member from UCLA named Kristine Pendeers who is looking for the Infinity Concerto - Opus 45. She wants to discover and perform it; and she has a friend who, with the help of letters and papers they hope to discover in Waltiri's estate, hopes to finish Mahler's unfinished Symphony. And they then plan play the two pieces together. Once the decision is made to start looking for these materials, Michael begins to fall under various attacks to stop him from completing these tasks.Hopefully the bits of plot I outlined above don't spoil the book for anyone - I could hardly outline less without being so vague about the basic plot of the book as to be basically providing you with a meaningless synopsis; however, there is so much more to this book than the above. Greg Bear weaves throughout this story a fascinating new mythos about the creation and evolution, de-evolution and re-evolution of man and the universe that I found to be quite astonishing in its depth and breadth. He weaves in references to several world religions and ties them in to his mythos, showing how the original truth was "twisted" over the years to conform to what would best serve those in power. It's a really interesting device and I enjoyed the way it was woven in throughout the story. You may also look at vegetarianism in a whole new light.There was only one thing about the story that bothered me and I'm not sure if it was because I misinterpreted what I was reading or if it is because of some sort of misogyny on the part of the author. It is mentioned several times throughout the course of the book that "magic is carried by the woman." However, not one single mage shown is a woman. If women carry the magic, why aren't there any female mages? Or, as I said, perhaps I am misinterpreting it, and by "carry" they mean like a recessive gene - they carry the magic, but cannot use it.Those who are fans of epic fantasy, magical realism, stories of the Sidhe (especially of the darker natures thereof) or simply well-crafted alternate realities, please do not miss this one.

In New York, the interior decorator Jan Morrow and the wolf composer Brad Allen share a party line, but Brad keeps it busy most of the time flirting with his girlfriends. They do not know each other but Jan hates Brads since she needs the telephone for her business and can not use it. Coincidently Jan's wealthy client Jonathan Forbes that woos her is the best friend of Brad and he comments with him that he feels an unrequited love for Jan, who is a gorgeous woman. When Brad meets Jan by chance in a restaurant, he poses as a naive tourist from Texas named Rex Stetson and seduces her. But Jonathan hires a private eye to find who Rex Stetson is.

New Yorkers Paul Bratter and Corie Bratter née Banks have just gotten married. He is a stuffed shirt just starting his career as a lawyer. She is an independently minded free spirit who prides herself on doing the illogical purely out of a sense of adventure, such acts as walking through Washington Square Park barefoot when it's 17°F outside. Their six day honeymoon at the Plaza Hotel shows that they can get to know each other easily in the biblical sense. But they will see if they can get to know each other in their real life when they move into their first apartment, a cozy (in other words, small), slightly broken down top floor unit in a five story walk-up. While Corie joyfully bounds up and down the stairs, Paul, always winded after the fact, hates the fact of having to walk up the six flights of stairs, if one includes the stairs that comprise the outside front stoop. Beyond the issues with the apartment itself, Paul and Corie will have to deal with an odd assortment of neighbors, most specifically eccentric senior Victor Velasco, who lives in the unusual attic and who would like to consider himself a dirty old man. Corie, worried about her single straight-laced mother Ethel Banks, wants to set her up with Victor. Without Corie or Paul truly realizing it, Ethel and Victor as a twosome is as illogical as Corie and Paul. What happens between Ethel and Victor may be a predictor if Corie and Paul's marriage can make it in the long run.

Sisters Kat and Daisy work along with Jojo at the pizza parlour in Mystic, Connecticut. Kat, shortly off to Yale, finds herself drawn to a local architect she is babysitting for, while her more tearaway sister starts dating a guy from the money side of the tracks. Jojo leaves her man at the altar; she loves him but shies away from commitment. Meanwhile the fame of the pizza continues to spread; it seems to contain something almost ..... mystic.

Documentary-filmmaker Bob Sanders and his wife Carol attend a group-therapy session that serves as the backdrop for the film's opening scenes. Returning to their Los Angeles home, the newly "enlightened" couple chastise their closest friends, Ted and Alice, for not coming to grips with their true feelings. Bob insists that everyone "feel" rather than intellectualize their emotions, and Carol pronounces "that's beautiful" after anyone says anything even remotely personal. Ted and Alice humor their friends, but a good-natured sexual tension is obviously at work among the foursome.

This vampire spoof has Count Dracula moving to New York to find his Bride, after being forced to move out of his Transylvanian castle. There with the aid of assistant Renfield, he stumbles through typical New York city life situations while pursuing Cindy Soundheim. But her boyfriend, Doctor Jeff Rosenberg, realizes she is under the influence of a vampire, and tries his bumbling best to convince police Lt Ferguson of what is going on, and to help him stop Dracula.

In a very poor zone of New York, April Burns and her boyfriend, Bobby, are preparing to receive April's family for thanksgiving dinner. While Bobby tries to borrow a suit for himself, April realizes that her stove is broken. She tries desperately to find a neighbor that can let her cook the turkey, since she does not want to fail (again) with her family. Meanwhile, in a suburb of Pennsylvania, her dysfunctional family is preparing to travel to New York. While driving, the relationship between the Burns and their black-sheep April is disclosed through the conversations between her father Jim, her resented mother Joy, her brother, her sister and her grandmother.

Well-respected psychiatrist Dr. Jack Mickler is only 10 days away from his retirement. A week before he is due to leave, he encounters a young man who attempts suicide--would be a pretty straightforward case except the young man claims to be Don Juan, the fabled Spanish nobleman and world renowned seducer/lover of woman. Despite original hostility from his co-workers, Jack manages to persuade his associates to put the youth in his care for 10 days after which the youth will undergo an evaluation to be either released from psychiatric care or sent to a mental institution. However, as the 10 days progresses, Dr. Mickler and the other staff become gradually drawn into to the young man's exotic world of love, passion and pleasure as he recounts his story to them. Whilst doing so the man's philosophies and zeal for life and love begins to revive Dr. Mickler's somewhat passionless relationship with his wife, Marilyn as well as challenging his own views and ethics to the point where both he and the audience begin to question: could this young man truly be Don Juan?

The project is conceived and led by one of the producers, Cynthia, but her boss, NWBC president Whitaker, will take the credit if it succeeds, and let her sink as the captain of the ship if it fails. The network is rebranded EdTV when Cynthia believes she's found her subject, Ed Pekurny, a native Texas hayseed, who fits the two main criteria that she is looking for in the person: he is easy on the eyes, and he has what seems to be a potential trainwreck of a life in that he he is thirty-one years old, spends most of his time hanging out at the bar, and has no ambition beyond his longtime dead end job as a clerk in a video store. Ed did not actively campaign for the job - his blowhard of a brother Ray was the one who played to the cameras when Cynthia's team was looking for subjects - but ultimately decided to do it after discussing it with those close to him, namely his immediately family of his mother, stepfather, and two siblings. After a slow start and despite some people associated with Ed hamming it up to the cameras in wanting their fifteen minutes of fame or more, Ed becomes enough of a toast to the TV watching public for the network to become a success. However, having the cameras rolling during certain times may not be the most advantageous for those directly involved, especially as someone from Ed's distant past reenters his life, and an issue with regard to Ray's relationship with his current girlfriend, a UPS delivery person named Shari who if Ed was being honest would admit that he is attracted to himself. Other issues that eventually do emerge is Ed and those around him using the cameras as a convenient excuse for things that happen, and as Whitaker, against Cynthia's wants as the moves being totally self-serving, begins to manipulate Ed to make EdTV more salacious TV viewing.

In the Dark Ages, there was a race of heroic warrior monsters known as Gargoyles. These creatures existed as stone during the day, but become flesh and blood at night. One Scottish clan made an alliance with humans to help protect a castle by night if the humans would protect their stone forms by day. The uneasy alliance was shattered when human prejudice provoked a betrayal that allowed the castle to be sacked and most of the resident clan destroyed, leaving only six adult survivors and a rookery of unhatched eggs. A further misunderstanding during the clan's retaliation on the invaders and rescue of their hostages left the clan frozen in stone by a magic spell that would only be broken when the "castle rises above the clouds." For a thousand years, the castle laid abandoned and the clan condemned by this curse. In 1994, a wealthy multibillionare named David Xanatos (Jonathan Frakes) bought the castle and transported the whole structure to Manhattan, where he placed it on top of the Eyrie building which he owned. It is high enough to be above the clouds, thus the conditions of the spell were met and the Gargoyles were revived. Now, this clan must adjust to this new age and gain friends, like Detective Elisa Maza (Salli Richardson-Whitfield), who reveals that Xanatos revived them to exploit them for his unscrupulous ends. This is coupled by the fact that another Gargoyle comrade, Demona (Marina Sirtis), is alive from their age, and is now an insane renegade bent on the extermination of humanity. Rebelling against them, the clan abandon the castle and pledge to protect New York City like they protected the castle in the past.
