Dive into this classic from the singular mind of Edgar Allan Poe, who is widely regarded as the master of short horror fiction. "The Fall of the House of Usher" recounts the terrible events that befall the last remaining members of the once-illustrious Usher clan before it is -- quite literally -- rent asunder. This early work by H. P. Lovecraft was originally published in 1924. Born in 1890 in Rhode Island, USA, Lovecraft began writing at a very young age, quickly developing a deep and abiding interest in science. In 1913, Lovecraft joined the UAPA (United Amateur Press Association) but it was four years later, in 1917, that he began to focus on fiction, producing such well-known early stories as 'Dagon' and 'A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson'. However, it was during the last decade of his life that Lovecraft produced his most notable works, such as 'the Dunwich Horror' and 'The Call of Cthulhu' which subsequently earned him his place as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

In H.P. Lovecraft's, "The Dunwich Horror", we are told the story of Wilbur Whateley, the son of a deformed albino mother and an unknown father (alluded to in passing by the mad Old Whateley as "Yog-Sothoth"), and the strange events surrounding his birth and precocious development. Wilbur matures at an abnormal rate, reaching manhood within a decade. All the while, his sorcerer grandfather indoctrinates him into certain dark rituals and the study of witchcraft.

Published in 1850, Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart is one of the best known and most memorable short stories ever written. Since there are dozens of commentaries and reviews here and elsewhere on the internet, in the spirit of freshness, I will take a particular focus: obsession with an eye or eyes and compare Poe’s tale with a few others. In The Painter of Eyes by Jean Richepin, we encounter an obscure artist who sells his soul to the Devil in order to paint at least one masterpiece. There is a bit of writing attached to the corner of his great painting that reads: “The Devil has informed me as to the secret of painting eyes. That secret consists of decanting the life from the models one wishes to represent and fixing that life on the canvas. In doing that, one slowly kills the people whose portrait one paints. It is sufficient for me to know that I have made this masterpiece. I commend my soul to the prayers, in case the Evil One does not leave me the time.” The writing ends abruptly since death strikes the artist in mid-sentence - his masterpiece is a self-portrait.In The Gaze another story by Jean Richepin, the narrator peers through the window of a cell at a madman holding his arms spread, head uplifted, transfixed by a point on a wall near the ceiling. The doctor-alienist relates to the narrator how this inmate is obsessed with the gaze of eyes from an artist's portrait. "For there was something in that gaze, believe me, that could trouble not only the already-enfeebled brain of a man afflicted with general paralysis, but even a sound and solid mind." Turns out, the narrator discovers the doctor is also driven mad by these eyes. So much so, the doctor took a scissors to the painting. We read: “In front of me, a fragment of a painting, cut out of a canvas with scissors, showed me a pair of eyes: the eyes of the portrait that the alienist said that he had lacerated, the eyes darting that famous gaze – in which, indeed, the very soul of gold was alive.”The Enigmatic Eye by Moacyr Scliar is a most imaginative tale of a wealthy old man who becomes infatuated with a portrait of an aristocratic gentleman in the town’s museum. And what makes this portrait so infatuating? Why, of course – the gaze of the right eye, which is truly enigmatic. The old man has his close friend steal the portrait from the museum so he can put it in his attic and sit in front of the painting, pondering the enigmatic gaze round the clock. The servants think the old man mad but he could care less – he has exactly what he wants – the portrait with its enigmatic eye right in his very own attic. Unfortunately, something unexpected happens. Due to the attic’s heat and light, the painting begins to fade and then, over time, vanishes. The old man concludes there is only one thing for him to do – he buys some brushes and oils and begins re-painting the portrait, starting with the enigmatic eye. Turning now to Poe’s tale, the narrator insists he should not be taken for a madman; rather, he is dreadfully nervous causing his senses, especially his sense of hearing, to be heightened and sharpened. He goes on to convey how once the idea of killing the old man of the house entered his brain, he was haunted by the idea day and night. And why would he want to kill this old man, a man who never wronged him? We read, “I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture – a pale blue eye, with a film over it.” What is it about a human eye, painted or real, when seen by someone who is mentally unstable? Perhaps part of the answer is given by contemporary Argentine author, Ernesto Sabato, when he says that hell is being the object of the gaze of another. Every one of Poe’s sentence is sheer perfection, building tension and suspense. For example, we read how the narrator, lantern in hand, secretly peers in at the sleeping old man at midnight. But then, one night, a noise wakes the old man and he sits bolt upright in bed. And what does the narrator do? We read, “I resolved to open a little – a very, very little crevice in the lantern. So I opened it – you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily – until, at length a single dim ray, like the thread of the spider, shot from out the crevice and fell full upon the vulture eye. It was open – wide, wide open – and I grew furious as I gazed upon it. I saw it with perfect distinctness – all a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow of my bones; but I could see nothing else of the old man’s face or person: for I had directed the ray as if by instinct, precisely upon the damned spot.”Anybody familiar with the story knows the narrator’s actions and emotions escalate from this point. What I find particularly fascinating is how the narrator’s obsession and fixation with the eye, once there is no more eye to fixate upon, quickly shifts into a heightened sense of feeling and, of course, heightened hearing. What a tale; what an author – a masterpiece of suspense and horror.*The quotes from the two tales by Jean Richepin are taken from The Crazy Corner a collection of stories translated by Brian Stableford and published by Black Coat Press.

For those who only know Clive Barker through his long multigenre novels, this one-volume edition of the Books of Blood is a welcome chance to acquire the 16 remarkable horror short stories with which he kicked off his career. For those who already know these tales, the poignant introduction is a window on the creator's mind. Reflecting back after 14 years, Barker writes:  I look at these pieces and I don't think the man who wrote them is alive in me anymore.... We are all our own graveyards I believe; we squat amongst the tombs of the people we were. If we're healthy, every day is a celebration, a Day of the Dead, in which we give thanks for the lives that we lived; and if we are neurotic we brood and mourn and wish that the past was still present. Reading these stories over, I feel a little of both. Some of the simple energies that made these words flow through my pen--that made the phrases felicitous and the ideas sing--have gone. I lost their maker a long time ago.  These enthusiastic tales are not ashamed of visceral horror, of blood splashing freely across the page: "The Midnight Meat Train," a grisly subway tale that surprises you with one twist after another; "The Yattering and Jack," about a hilarious demon who possesses a Christmas turkey; "In the Hills, the Cities," an unusual example of an original horror premise; "Dread," a harrowing non-supernatural tale about being forced to realize your worst nightmare; "Jacqueline Ess: Her Will and Testament," about a woman who kills men with her mind. Some of the tales are more successful than others, but all are distinguished by strikingly beautiful images of evil and destruction. In order to prepare for the construction of a new reservoir in Massachusetts, he surveys a rural area that is to be flooded near the town of Arkham. He comes across a mysterious, abandoned farmstead, which is completely devoid of all life. At the center of the farmstead is an old well. The site fills him with an unnatural sense of dread, and he hurries past it....

Wow, what an amazing book. I had previously read Evans-Pritchard’s (hereafter E-P) other ethnographic classic, The Nuer. The subtitle of that book is ‘A description of the modes of livelihood and political institutions of a Nilotic people.” And yet in Witchcraft, Oracles, and Magic among the Azande, E-P says next to nothing about Zande modes of livelihood or political institutions. It almost seems as though the two books had distinct authors. On the one hand, The Nuer is about food and ecology, kinship and politics, and a subsistence economy. And The Nuer is about cows, the most significant possession for the men of this tribe. On the other hand, Among the Azande is about witchcraft and magic, belief and action, the social function of mystical rituals, and the psyche of the typical Azande. And it is about chickens used in oracles, oracles being the central quasi-judicial preoccupation of the Azande. It seems the two books are so different because the two tribes, Nuer and Azande, are so different. The Nuer and the Azande have contrasting ways of looking at the world, and they both revealed to E-P where their primary interests and concerns lie.Witchcraft is very much a primary interest and concern for the typical Zande male. As E-P makes clear, witchcraft is the key to understanding many other aspects of Zande belief and behavior. Witchcraft explains all sorts of unfortunate events, even nightmares. The Azande treat all deaths as the result of witches. E-P’s classic example of witchcraft goes something like this: people were sitting under a granary to get away from the heat of the sun. At that point the granary collapsed and the people were killed. The granary fell on account of termites. However, “that it should collapse is easily intelligible, but why it should have collapsed at that particular moment when these particular people were sitting beneath it?” Thus, whenever someone dies in an accident or from another cause, an ulterior cause of witchcraft is imputed.When a kindred dies or when a crop fails, witches are always to blame. The Azande believe that a substance called mangu inhabits the body of witches, perhaps unbeknownst to the witch. If a witch feels anger or contempt toward some person, and then that person dies or suffers a major mishap, the witchcraft substance mangu is said to be hot or active in the witch. The ‘witch’ himself does nothing to activate his mangu. In fact, it would appear that nobody with volition and intention ever acts ‘witch-like.’ If some misfortune occurs, one suspects witchcraft among the victim’s enemies, who might have unconsciously directed their active witchcraft substance against the victim.In order to verify that someone is a witch, an oracle must be consulted. There are a number of different kinds of oracles, but the most reliable and most expensive of these is the poison oracle. The oracle is asked if so-and-so is a witch. A poisoned chicken is observed. If it dies, the question is repeated with a second chicken, and if that chicken dies the answer is no. And if the first one lived, and the second one lived the answer is also no. To be an affirmative response to the question, the oracle must be performed twice, with one chicken dying and one living in either order. Part of the reason this form of divination is preferred is that it is harder to cheat or fake an outcome, and so the poison oracle is felt to be the most reliable. If someone is found to be a witch, the wing of the dead bird is brought to that person. He will almost certainly claim that the he had no knowledge of being a witch and did nothing intentionally wrong. He then blows a spray of water over the ground, which cools his mangu, his witchcraft-substance, and removes the mangu’s potential to do harm.If the oracle fails to identify the witch, then a witch-doctor’s vengeance magic is practiced on behalf of the kin of the injured or ‘murdered’ man. When a neighbor in the village subsequently dies, this is often taken as indicating the success of the vengeance magic in identifying the culprit and bringing him down. Interestingly, there once again appear to be nobody in Zandeland who admits to being a witch, and it is probable that nobody ever actually practices black magic there. The Azande freely consult witch-doctors and diviners and administer good medicines to help counteract evil witchcraft. But evil magic appears always to be imputed to others and not actually practiced. Witch-doctors are not themselves witches, but they are tasked with identifying and collecting magical vines and tree barks which are prepared into medicines. The fact that people usually recover from illness or misfortune is taken as evidence that the medicine is potent and effective. And if the patient dies despite the witch-doctor’s treatment, then that just shows that some witch’s mangu was even more powerful than the counteracting medicines.The witch-doctors belong to secret associations, but they are not clergy. It would in fact be difficult and perhaps unwise to try to see the Azande as having anything comparable to what one might call organized religion. The Azande practice ritual in accord with their oral tradition. Being illiterate, they have no religious texts to consult. Yet these practices (witchcraft, oracles, and magic) fulfill a similar role to religion (and science) by providing a rationale for the unexplained. The witch-doctors’ specialized knowledge is maintained by witch-doctor lodges, which were made illegal by the British colonial powers. Now as an underground institution, this form of shamanism has become a counter-discourse against foreign powers and against the Zande princes, who fear secret associations as subversive and who are seen as being in complicity with the colonial regime.The best part of this book is E-P’s reflections on fieldwork, found as an appendix to Witchcraft, Oracles, and Magic among the Azande. In it, E-P emphasizes the importance of linguistic research as the bedrock to effective fieldwork. For E-P, ethnography ultimately comes down to translation. And what is translated in the end comes down to what the natives are interested in talking about. In the field, you study what you can. And if your informants are into magic and witchcraft, that is what you write about. And if your informants are into cattle herding, then you write a book about that instead.Like I said, this work is amazing. But I do have a few critical remarks. The reasoning and rationale behind Zande beliefs is presented without any kind of coherent psychological analysis. The reader is left to form his or her own opinion about what it feels like to be an Azande in the heat of mystical battle. Maybe that is a good thing. But E-P offers no character development or narrative about specific individuals (comparable to Turner’s Muchona, Griaule’s Ogotemmeli, or Crapenzano’s Tuhami). The emphasis is all on social machinery and not about subjective experience. Also, there is little trace of how the Azande gain a livelihood. If magic does not touch an aspect of their culture, then we simply do not hear about that aspect of the culture. Finally, the work does not offer much of a political analysis of either the Zande princes or of the colonial British. If Gluckman were writing about the Azande, I would expect to see more about how witchcraft regulates or channels conflict and about how missionaries are rending the Zande cultural fabric apart by prohibiting witchcraft, oracles, and magic for being in some way satanic.But despite all that, I feel that E-P’s Witchcraft, Oracles, and Magic among the Azande would have to be in the top 50 at the ethnography hall of fame. The observations in the work are perceptive, sympathetic, and clear. And despite the lack of any cogent narrative, the writing feels crisp, and the analyses are seldom dull. Like E-P, I started out in the field of classics, and in this his first ethnography, this work about the Azande, E-P answers many questions about how witchcraft, oracles, and magic might structure belief and experience in any pagan culture, including classical pagan civilization. In conclusion, If the reader wishes to know how an African culture physically functions in a particular ecology, then you should go to The Nuer. But if the reader wants a classic account of how an African culture psychically functions in a web of social bonds and suspicions, then Azande is the way to go. You most likely won’t be disappointed either way.

The founding document of economic anthropology! Bronislaw Malinowski, one of the all-time great anthropologists of the world, had a talent for bringing together in single comprehension the warm reality of human living with the cool abstractions of science. In the Arizona desert, Professor Gerald Deemer (Leo G. Carroll) is experimenting with growth hormones in the hopes of finding a way to increase the world's food supply. His partner in the project was recently found dead in the desert, suffering from a disease that normally takes years to advance, but, in his case, seems to have afflicted him in only a few days. The local doctor, Matt Hastings (John Agar), is puzzled by the strange case and, with Deemer's recently arrived (and very pretty) assistant, Stephanie "Steve" Clayton (Mara Corday), tries to figure out what is going on. When cattle remains are found in the countryside, evidence points to a giant tarantula as the culprit.

When it comes to crime, Belgrade is just the same as any other modern metropolis, except for having its own serial killers. That blank is filled when a flower salesman begins strangling women. A popular, but very disturbed, rock star soon becomes telepathically connected with the killer.

It's a post-apocalyptic world, several years after whatever the cataclysmic event, which has in turn caused frequent quakes as further potential hazards. The world is gray and getting quickly grayer as more and more things die off. A man and his pre-teen son, who was born after the apocalypse, are currently on the road, their plan to walk to the coast and head south where the man hopes there will be a more hospitable environment in which to live. The man has taught his son that they are the "good people" who have fire in their hearts, which in combination largely means that they will not resort to cannibalism to survive. The man owns a pistol with two bullets remaining, which he will use for murder/suicide of him and his son if he feels that that is a better fate for them than life in the alternative. Food and fuel are for what everyone is looking. The man has taught his son to be suspect of everyone that they may meet, these strangers who, out of desperation, may not only try to steal what they have managed to scavenge for their own survival, but may kill them as food. Although life with his father in this world is all the boy has known, he may come to his own thoughts as to what it means holistically to be one of the good or one of the bad. Meanwhile, the man occasionally has thoughts to happier times with his wife/the boy's mother before the apocalypse, as well as not as happy times with her after the apocalypse and the reason she is no longer with them.

In 1943, group of Croatian soldiers overtake a strategically important point in western Bosnia with a goal to destroy a group of communist partisans. On the way they met some supernatural phenomena, and the action itself went very badly because the partisans ambushed them. The main character Martin inherits silver cigarette case from a dying soldier. This act connects to the story in 1993 when we meet Martins grandson Tomo. He is one of six soldiers of the Croatian army who have come to the same place in Bosnia to meet the same phenomena and similar fate.

A comedy about two people with different world-views, from different places, whose fate, with the help from a bull Garonja (a name given to the black bulls in villages of Croatia), intertwine. Ante (Goran Bogdan) is a peasant from Dalmatian hinterland, a son of an bull fights organizer, and skilled insurance salesman. He is known by his powers of persuasion. At the voting for the Law for animal protection, biggest controversy is considering bull fights. Sonja (Judita Frankovic) is from Zagreb, an inveterate activist fighting for animal rights. In Dalmatian hinterland nobody can understand her attitude. They conclude that Sonja, regardless of the declared intense love of animals, would not dare stand in front of a bull. About Sonja and Anthony , the central pair who in his romantic comedy game going a little farther - a little back, a series of actions is carried out in the style of a wild untamed satire at the expense of local "yellow" media and important institutions such as the Croatian Parliament.

Don Fabijan is a young priest who comes to serve on an unnamed small island in the Adriatic. In order to help increase birth rate on the island, he decides to pierce condoms before they are sold. He therefore teams up with the newsagent Petar and the pharmacist Marin. After they abolish all forms of birth control on the entire island, the consequences become more and more complicated.

Within the chambers of a desolate house, a solitary servant tends to his invalid master. Tangibly detailed period design and hauntingly lifelike puppetry unearth the dreamworld of Poe.

Six young friends decide that the 2015 spring equinox is a great reason to throw a party. Two of them will prepare the "venue", the other two will get the booze, and the last two will get the weed. And right before midnight, they'll meet at the party to welcome the arrival of spring. Or not, depending on how they handle the situations they find themselves in while trying to run their seemingly simple errands, in which we get to know Zagreb, its life and nightlife, and the characters get to know themselves and each other.

The story is seen through the eyes of 6 year old Perica Safranek. On a family picnic Perica's mother starts flirting with Mr Fulir, a Zagreb Dandy. The father at first doesn't notice it, but wants to marry off the aunt. After a couple of invitations to their Zagreb home, the father becomes aware of Fulir's passes at his wife...

Eliciting images of cancer, this drama explores the illnesses that plague post-war Croatia. Four young junkies in Zagreb maturing in the wake of war reflect the petty hatreds, violence, prejudices and mood hanging over the country like a disease that spreads with no cure in sight.

A movie studio is being torn down. TV interviewer Genya Tachibana has tracked down its most famous star, Chiyoko Fujiwara, who has been a recluse since she left acting some 30 years ago. Tachibana delivers a key to her, and it causes her to reflect on her career; as she's telling the story, Tachibana and his long-suffering cameraman are drawn in. The key was given to her as a teenager by a painter and revolutionary that she helped to escape the police. She becomes an actress because it will make it possible to track him down, and she spends the next several decades acting out that search in various genres and eras.

A young woman goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside following the death of her ex-husband.

Mark Lewis, works as a focus puller in a British film studio. On his off hours, he supplies a local porno shop with cheesecake photos and also dabbles in filmmaking. A lonely, unfriendly, sexually repressed fellow, Mark is obsessed with the effects of fear and how they are registered on the face and behavior of the frightened. This obsession dates from the time when, as a child, he served as the subject of some cold-blooded experiments in terror conducted by his own scientist father. As a grown man, Mark becomes a compulsive murderer who kills women and records their contorted features and dying gasps on film. His ongoing project is a documentary on fear. With 16mm camera in hand, he accompanies a prostitute to her room and stabs her with a blade concealed in his tripod, all the while photographing her contorted face in the throes of terror and death. Alone in his room, he surrounds himself with the sights and sounds of terror: taped screams, black-and-white "home movies" of convulsed faces. At his house, he meets Helen Stephens, a young woman who lives with her blind mother in a downstairs flat. Late one night, a beautiful and well-dressed young woman, Grace (Nicole Kidman), arrives in the mountainous old mining town of Dogville as a fugitive; following the sound of gunshots in the distance which have been heard by Tom (Paul Bettany), the self-appointed moral spokesman for the town. Persuaded by Tom, the town agree to hide Grace, and in return she freely helps the locals. However, when the Sheriff from a neighbouring town posts a Missing notice, advertising a reward for revealing her whereabouts, the townsfolk require a better deal from Grace, in return for their silence; and when the Sheriff returns some weeks later with a Wanted poster, even though the citizens know her to be innocent of the false charges against her, the town's sense of goodness takes a sinister turn and the price of Grace's freedom becomes a workload and treatment akin to that of a slave. But Grace has a deadly secret that the townsfolk will eventually encounter.

Out in California's San Fernando Valley, Isabel is trying to reinvent herself. A naïve, good-natured witch, she is determined to disavow her supernatural powers and lead a normal life. Texas bar owner Julian Marty, who is generally regarded as not a nice person, hires shady private detective Loren Visser, who is able to obtain what Marty requests evidence - in this instance, photographic - that his wife, Abby, and one of his bartenders, Ray, are having an affair. As Ray and Abby realize that Marty has found out about them, it allows them to plan for their future away from Marty, while being up front with Marty about the situation. Marty, in turn, decides to hire Visser once again, this time to kill Abby and Ray, and dispose of their bodies so that they won't be found. The out-in-the-open affair and the contract hit lead to some actions based on self-interest and a standoff of sorts between the four players, which is compounded in complexity by some wrong assumptions of what has happened, with an innocent bystander, another of the Marty's bartenders, Meurice, potentially, and unwittingly, adding to the scenario.

Dr. Jekyll believes good and evil exist in everyone. Experiments reveal his evil side, named Hyde. Experience teaches him how evil Hyde can be: he kills Ivy who earlier expressed interest in Jekyll and Sir Charles, Jekyll's fiancée's father.
